Puppy Crate Training – Part 5

Everyone knows that raising a puppy means that they could have accidents in the house during puppy crate training.

This is very important – you can only correct your puppy for a mistake in the house (using your floor for a bathroom) if you catch it in the act of doing it. Even if it’s 2 seconds later, it’s TOO LATE!

Your puppy cannot associate what you are scolding it for if it’s not doing it at that moment. The old “rub it’s nose in it” trick or taking it back to the scene of the crime after the fact, does not work and your puppy has no idea why your doing it.

But remember, we are not leaving our puppy alone in the house without our supervision, so we will be able to catch it in the act.

Using this system should limit the accidents in the house because you will be getting your puppy on a schedule of taking it outside.

If your puppy does have an accident in the house, remember to use an odor neutralizer to clean the area and neutralize the scent. This will deter your puppy from going back and using the same spot.  This is a very important aspect of puppy crate training that will make your training easier.

When you catch your puppy in the act, calmly walk over to your puppy and give it whatever command you have decided to mean “No” or “Bad”.

When you do this, do not use an angry voice, but rather a firm voice. Now immediately pick up your puppy and take it outside, so it can finish it’s business in the proper place.

If you happen to have a “stronger” or more “determined” puppy, perhaps one of the tougher breeds to train, you might have to use a slightly different technique.

When you walk over to your puppy grab it by the scruff of the neck and gently shake it while saying whatever command you have decided to mean “NO” or “Bad”.

This is what it’s mother would do if she caught her puppy doing something she didn’t approve of.

When your puppy resumes his business outside make sure that you immediately praise it with the command that you chose for using the bathroom outside.

Again, we are teaching the puppy what we want it to do and reinforcing it during puppy crate training.
