Puppy Feeding Guide

Puppy feeding is one of the most important aspects of owning a puppy.  Why?  I’ll tell you, and I’ll also give you a super ninja tip that I used when feeding my puppy to keep it from choking.  Read on.

Think about it, what your puppy eats helps it grow and stay healthy.

You probably wouldn’t feel too good if you ate junk all day.

Nuff said about that, you get the point (I hope).

It can really be broken down into two parts.

Part one, what you feed your puppy.

Part two, how and when.

Feeding an all natural organic diet is the best option when feeding your puppy to help it grow up strong and healthy.

You will have some people tell  you that you should only feed your puppy this type of diet, and if you can’t then don’t own a puppy.

Let’s not get carried away, stay with me.

I agree that if you can, you should feed an all natural, organic diet.  This will be the absolute best for your puppy throughout it’s life.

Having said that, I understand that not everyone can afford this and/or has the time required to prepare this type of diet.

Here come the hippie dog lovers – telling me “if you can’t afford it you shouldn’t get a puppy”

I say – “Not all people can afford an organic diet for themselves because it costs a lot more, should they not have kids???”

Ok back to my story, sorry for the tangent.

Just be smart about it, if you can afford feeding your puppy organic all natural start there.  If you can’t, go with a high quality store bought food.

Puppy food is going to have a higher protein percentage than adult dog food to help your puppy grow and have energy.

Every once in a while, give your puppy some natural food if you can, like cooking it some chicken and brown rice.

The next part, and my nifty puppy feeding trick is how to feed and a puppy feeding schedule you can go by.

You puppy should be fed three times a day, then when it gets a little older it can be reduced to twice a day.  Some dog trainers even will tell you that you can just feed your adult dog, once in the morning and that’s it.

Now back to the puppies.

Once in the morning, afternoon, and night (early enough to process the food and use the bathroom before bedtime).

You should also wait about a 1/2 hour and then take your puppy outside to use the bathroom each time after it eats.

Here’s my nifty circus stunt puppy feeding tip that will save your puppy from choking on it’s food.

Wait for it…

Drum roll please…

Soak your puppy food in water for about 10 minutes before you feed it.

Yup, that’s right, just put your puppy food in it’s bowl and add water until it’s fully covered, wait about 10 minutes until it’s soft and then drain the water and serve.

Most puppies scarf down there food faster than you can say scrumbiddalyumshous five times fast.  How’s that for a tongue twister?

When I used to feed my young german shepherd puppy dry dog food without soaking it first, it would choak and hack as he tried to skip the chewing process (not recommended by the way!).

When I found out the soaking trick, no more choaking or hacking.

Good enough reason for me!

These puppy feeding guidelines are the key to having a healthy, happy, strong, puppy that grows up into a well rounded dog.
