There are a lot of different types of crates as well. The first one is made of plastic and sometimes referred to as an airline crate. The have a lot of vents on the sides and a wire front door with a latch on it. These sometimes make your puppy feel more secure because of the plastic sides and back.
One other common type of crate is the wire crate. A wire crate is much more open and has wire construction on all four sides with a plastic tray in the bottom. It has a latching door as well and is very secure from escape. Some puppies feel less secure in these types of crates because of the wire sides and back.
Both of these types of crates come in different colors of choice. If you search online you can also find other types of crates made of nylon or cloth, but these are mainly portable and temporary solutions for travel. Puppy crate training can help with many behavior issues, such as teething on your furniture, peeing in the house, and separation anxiety.
The den like nature of the puppy crates will help you teach your puppy when and where you would like it to use the bathroom and sleep. To make your puppy comfortable with the crate from the start, try and make it an enjoyable place for it by putting a cushion on the bottom, some treats, and some toys inside.
The toys and treat will entice your puppy to go inside on it’s own so that you don’t have to force it in. Your puppy may not go all of the way in, in the beginning when investigating things out, but will get more comfortable in due time. When your puppy does go in on it’s own, start closing the door for short periods of time while you remain in the room.
Eventually you will want to start exiting the room for short periods of time as well as your puppy gets more comfortable. After it gets used to being in it’s crate for some time, it will be ready to stay longer and longer inside the crate when you are away. When puppy crate training your dog, be sure that there is nothing in the crate that your puppy can choke on when you leave.
It is a good idea not to leave your puppy in it’s crate for more than a few hours at a time during the day. Longer periods of time in the crate might end up in your puppy having an accident. The other thing is to never put your puppy in it’s crate as a punishment. You want your puppy to associate it’s crate with only good things.
When you take the proper steps, the crate can and will become a safe and secure place for your puppy. You might even see it go in there on it’s own to relax or take a nap. Dogs are den animals by nature and puppy crate training is a natural thing to do. They will instinctively feel more comfortable inside the crate because of this natural instinct. Take some time and make sure that you select the best crate for your puppy to help with your puppy crate training endeavor.
