You will want to get your puppy on a schedule of going outside. First thing in the morning, then every few hours afterwords including after meals and right before bed.

As your puppy gets older he will be able to go longer periods of time between using the bathroom. Some puppies will need to go more frequently, and you will be able to tell as you get more experience.

Until this time, the more trips outside the better.

This will make the process of puppy crate training a lot easier for you.  Instead of always worrying if your puppy has to go out or not, having a schedule will keep everything on track.

On a side note to puppy crate training, be careful how long you take your puppy for a walk. Young dogs can only walk for so long before they get tired and put too much stress on their developing bodies.

There is a really nice local park by my house, that has a 3 mile paved walkway around a lake.

I like to go there whenever I get a chance, and I always see people with young puppies carrying them the last half of the way.

They didn’t realize that their young puppy could not make it all the way around and just stopped and laid down about half way.  Always air on the side of less at this young age as opposed to more. As your puppy gets older it will be able to go on longer and longer walks.

Eventually your puppy will learn what you want it to do, and the difference between right and wrong.

Then you can start saying “Want to go (insert here whatever command you decided to use, for using the bathroom outside)” and your puppy will begin to associate that with using the bathroom outside.

This is one of the major secrets to puppy crate training. Take it outside and always remember to praise the dog when it uses the bathroom outside and reinforce this behavior.

These steps followed in order will make the process of puppy crate training easy and enjoyable and should save you time in this endeavor.

Once your puppy is crate trained it will provide a well rewarding experience of enjoying it’s company that much more.
